Breaking into your house or apartment: Burglars prefer to do this when nobody is there—during the vacation season, for example. To prevent them from even noticing that you are away, ask your neighbors to empty your letterbox regularly while you are away.
Don’t include your address on your profiles, and don’t share posts that show your absence. Do not forget: Even the status message that you are in the pub around the corner can be an “invitation for burglars,” according to the German VdS Schadenverhütung, which is a subsidiary of the German Insurance Association (GDV).
You should also not attach visible luggage tags with your address to your luggage when you are traveling. Otherwise, burglars at train stations or airports can all too easily read that your home will probably be empty for a while.
It can also be useful if neighbors or acquaintances raise your shutters during the day, lower them in the evening, and switch on the lights in your home when it gets dark—for example when they are watering your flowers or looking after the cat.
Of course, you can also use timers to simulate your presence via the lighting. With electric roller shutters, you can usually program the raising and lowering of the shutters using a timer anyway. However, if you do not have any of these options, it is better to leave the shutters open during your vacation than to close them permanently. This is recommended by the K-Burglary Initiative.
It sounds simple, but it can be forgotten in a hurry: lock all windows and doors before you leave, including the attic door and basement windows and doors. And, of course, if you have an alarm system, you should also switch it on now. Valuables are also best locked away during your vacation, for example, in a safe deposit box or safe.
